Irlandolingvo en la Kortumoj

...de la Irish Times:

A ban on the use of the Irish language in courts in the North which stretches back to 1737 was put to the test yesterday.

In the High Court in Belfast Mr Justice Treacy was asked to hold that the centuries-old ban should be quashed as it was in conflict with the Human Rights Act and European treaties.

The claim of discrimination against the Irish language arose in an application for judicial review brought by
Caoimhín Mac Giolla Catháin, a member of the Shaw's Road Gaeltacht community in west Belfast...

Stormont kaj la Irlandalingvo

...de la Irish Times:

How the DUP handles plans for an Irish Language Act will indicate whether powersharing in Northern Ireland will work or is doomed to failure, Gerry Adams said tonight.

The Sinn Féin leader said the issues of equality involved in the debate over legislative protection for gaelic speakers were the same as those at the heart of the current impasse at Stormont.

The West Belfast MP said DUP opposition to an act was indicative of the party’s unwillingness to fully sign up to the principles of partnership and equality.

He was speaking after a meeting with DUP Culture Minister Gregory Campbell. Mr Campbell’s predecessor and party colleague Edwin Poots ruled out an Irish Language Act citing its prohibitive costs.

He instead committed to furthering the interests of Irish speakers through a minority language strategy.

However Sinn Féin claims the full Act is required by the terms of the 2006 St Andrews Agreement upon which devolution was set up in Northern Ireland last year...

Irlandalingvo en Belfasto

...de la New York Times:

Midway through the set, I heard an unfamiliar language being spoken and turned to face a bearded, stringy-haired young man clad in baggy sweatshirt and jeans sitting beside me at the bar. He introduced himself as Caomhín Mac Mac Giolla Catháin, a fiddler and devotee of Gaelic, which, like Irish folk music, has been enjoying a revival in Belfast the last few years.

Many of the people in the room, Caomhín (the name means gentle offspring) told me, were regulars — traditionalists who showed up at Maddens on Friday nights to pay homage to both the ancient language and Ireland’s rich musical heritage. “This is the real thing,” Mr. Giolla Catháin said of the music.

Nine Welsh language interpreters have passed the European Union interpretation test.

The interpreters visited Brussels last month to take the tough test and all were all praised for their skill.

They can now take part in demanding translating work during European Union debates where up to 20 languages may be spoken, including Welsh.

Geraint Wyn Parry of Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru (Association of Welsh Translators and Interpreters) said: “The pass rate of 75% is fantastic when you consider that only about 40% of candidates usually succeed.

Welsh Language Board chairman Meri Huws said: “The new status of the Welsh language within the European Union is another important landmark.”

…de Foinse:

Tá sé geall le bheith cinnte anois go dtoghfar bean as Gaeltacht Chonamara ina Seanadóir Stáit i Maine i Meiriceá ar an 4ú lá de Shamhain. Tá roinnt blianta caite cheana féin ag Margaret Craven mar Fheisire Parlaiminte sa Stát ach beidh sí ag dul chuig an bhfóram Parlaiminte is airde stádas anois.
