Arfon Gwilym

...de WalesOnline:

A former Welsh rights campaigner has been denied a visa to take part in the biggest-ever US exhibition of our culture over offences committed decades ago.

Music publisher Arfon Gwilym was invited to take part in Smithsonian Institute’s exhibition as a folk, penillion (harp accompaniment) and plygain (carol) singer.

But after a seven-hour wait at the US embassy, in London, his visa was refused because of his activities as a former member of Cymdeithas yr Iaith (Welsh Language Society)...

Sinn Féin, Nov-Jorko kaj la Irlandalingvo

TACAIGH LE FOINSE!!!!

"We always assumed that Sinn Féin supported Irish so much that they would have banged the table, and shouted and roared their opposition to this act of short sighted cultural homicide.

But no, Sinn Féin agreed totally, with the result that Lá Nua, the first and only Irish language daily is no more and ten people in west Belfast's Gaeltacht Quarter were dumped onto the dole and started 2009 out of work."

Pobal, la Konsilio de Eŭropo kaj la Irlandalingvo

…de EuroLang:

POBAL, the Irish language watchdog organisation, has urged the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers to take immediate action over the protection and promotion of the Irish language in Northern Ireland. It follows the recent publication of the UK’s report on its implementation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority languages.

The organisation recently warned that the Northern Ireland Assembly and the UK government were “incapable of meeting their commitments under international law”.

The group's concerns were raised last week after the UK sent its report to the Council of Europe. In the report the UK said that it is still waiting for a supplementary report from the Northern Ireland government...

An Seanadóir Piaras Ó Dochartaigh

Doherty ejected from Seanad after Foinse row Jun 10, 9:12 am

Donegal Senator Pearse Doherty was last evening thrown out of the Seanad as he persistently demanded an explanation as to why the Island's only Irish language newspaper is being allowed to close.

Senator Doherty was commenting on the winding down on Foinse this week due to a lack of funding, this despite he claims, Brian Cowen’s public commitment to the Irish language.

Senator Doherty says the government is deserting the language.

"Adiaŭ la Kelta Tigro!"

...de la Irish Times:

“The topic of the recession was widely anticipated and appeared as an essay: ‘Slán leis an Tíogar Ceilteach!’,” said Claire Grealy of the Institute of Education, Dublin. “An essay topic on US president Barack Obama was also welcomed. A very general essay topic, ‘The people and the things that were important to me as a teenager’ allowed candidates to use their imagination”, she said…

…Examiners could not resist their “annual spot of navel-gazing” with a number of questions featuring the Irish tongue as the subject, said one commentator.

“The subject of the Irish language itself was a theme throughout the paper; as a debate topic, and [it] also featured in the newspaper article question, in the form of an interview with a Gaelscoil principal,” said Claire Grealy.

“This theme also appeared in the comprehension section of the paper, referring to a new Gaeltacht created in Canada.”

Overall the paper was received very favourably by candidates, who were comfortable with the language used and the opportunities the questions presented….

Alia Irlandalingva Ĵurnalo en Danĝero?

...de la Irish Times:

The only Irish-language newspaper in existence, Foinse , says it may cease publication after this weekend with the possible loss of 10 full-time and two part-time jobs in the Conamara Gaeltacht, unless it receives more funding from the cross-Border Irish language promotion body, Foras na Gaeilge.

The paper’s owner, Pádraig Ó Céidigh, said in a statement that he had informed staff yesterday at the Carraroe-based weekly that he had refused to accept a new contract from Foras na Gaeilge, because of the amount of money involved.

He will have an emergency meeting with the funders today about the newspaper which was founded in 1996. He said that unless some ‘‘solution’’ was found, this weekend’s edition would be the last.

Unuiĝintaj Nacioj kaj la Irlandalingvo

...de la blogo, From the Balcony, de Máirtín Ó Muilleoir:

POBAL, the umbrella organisation for the Irish speaking community in the North has won unprecedented support from the United Nations for the Irish Language Act.

The UN has said that it is concerned that there is still no protection for the Irish language in the North, especially in the light of legislation for Welsh and Scottish Gaelic.

Janet Muller, CEO with POBAL said, “POBAL has worked for over a year to bring this matter to the attention of the UN.

This is the first time ever that the Economic and Social Council has referred specifically to language matters in this manner in its report on economic, social and cultural rights”...
