On the first day of Seachtain na Gaeilge 2008, last Monday March 3 at 1pm the first national Irish-language radio station aimed at young people called RAIDIÓ X was launched on the cricket field of the historic grounds of Trinity College in Dublin. One hundred young Irish-speakers gathered to create a huge human X on the field as a symbol of the station and to give it an explosive launch.

Raidió X is broadcasting throughout Ireland 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via its website www.raidiox.com. The station will be aiming at the age-group 15-35 years old and will add substantially to Irish language radio listenership. The station will also provide a platform to musicians who sing through Irish.

The new national Irish-language radio station for young people has been temporarily called Raidió X. A national competition is currently underway with entrant leaflets being widely distributed throughout the country during Seachtain na Gaeilge. Entries can also be sent in via email to raidio@cnag.ie. The closing date for entries is St. Patrick's Day, Monday, 17th March. The winner will also receive an iPod Nano for coming up with the best name.

The Gaelic proverb ‘Tús maith leath na h-oibre’ — meaning a good start is half the work — is particularly relevant in today’s working climate, given how valuable a basic command of, or indeed fluency in, the Irish language has become.

Gone are the days when three weeks as a cinnire in a Connemara Gaeltacht or a B+ in honours Irish was as useful as a relay medal in terms of finding employment outside the realm of teaching. Today, the ability to speak Irish should be highlighted in bold print on CVs and worn as a badge of honour. The reason is simple — Irish has become fashionable.

We owe this renewed energy to a number of changes in society....

...In June 2007, the first official Gaeltacht outside of Ireland was established in Kingston, Ontario, Canada by ex-pat Aralt Mac Giolla Chainnigh, a Gaelgeoir from Belfast. His aim was to enable those living abroad to come back into contact with the language. The community has created many employment opportunities for those living in North America with a fluency in the language.

So if you wish to brush up on your own Irish ability, why not start now? Seachtain Na Gaeilge runs from 13-17 March and organisers are encouraging as many people as possible to take part in events around the country.

Hundreds of people from across County Clare are expected to participate in Seachtain na Gaeilge 2008, which will be launched with a concert by Kíla in Glór Irish Music Centre this coming Friday (29th February).

The seven-piece band will participate in the annual celebration of the Irish language and culture along with a number of other high profile participants.

They include Éanna Ní Lamhna, botanist, writer, radio personality and President of An Taisce; Ceoltóirí na Mainistreach, an Ennis-based Ceilí band; Ré Ó Laighléis, the biggest selling contemporary writer in the Irish language; Theo Dorgan, award winning Cork-born poet and broadcaster; Pádraig Mac Fhearghusa, Poet, Editor of Feasta magazine and Chair of the Joint Committee on the Irish Language; Bríd Ní Mhóráin, poet and author of an acclaimed study of Iveragh peninsula Irish; and artist Ceara Conway…
