Tutmonda Varmiĝo

...de la Daily Post:

The first ever Welsh language climate change conference is being held in Mid Wales next week.

The two-day event, at the Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod, on April 14-15, will be conducted entirely in Welsh with a simultaneous translation service for non-Welsh speakers.

Delegates will consider whether Wales is seriously addressing the challenge of climate change - and what measures are needed.

Among the speakers is Morgan Parry, head of WWF Cymru and a member of Wales Climate Change Commission, who said: “Policies made today in Wales will determine whether greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise in the next few years, and whether Wales will make its contribution to the global battle against climate change, or continue to be one of the worst culprits"...

Brian Ó Comhain, T.D.

...de Lá Nua:

Chuir Brian Cowen, TD, tús lena cheannaireacht ar Fhianna Fáil inné le ráiteas láidir ar son na Gaeilge.

Tá fáilte curtha ag Conradh na Gaeilge roimh an ráiteas, ach dúirt siad gur ghá beart a dhéanamh de réir briathair.

Ag caint dó tar éis gur ceapadh é ina cheannaire ar an pháirtí is mó sa tír, thosaigh an Teachta Cowen a óráid le sliocht i nGaeilge.

“I dtosach báire, ba mhaith liom labhairt i mo theanga dhúchais. Is mór an onóir dom ceannaireacht an pháirti a ghlacadh agus táim fíorbhuíoch do mo chomhpholaiteoirí, mo chairde, a roghnaigh mé don phost fíor-thábhactach seo.

“Ó bhíos ar scoil, tá grá agam don teanga agus tá sé ar intinn agam gach tacaíocht a thabhairt d'fhorbairt na Gaoluinne amach anseo.

“Cé nách féidir linn go léir ár dteanga a labhairt go líofa, táim cinnte go bhfuilimid báúil di,” arsa sé...

Claude Chavasse

...de la Galway Advertiser:

When I was a schoolboy at the Jes, an unusual man with an unusual name, Claude Chavasse, was occasionally brought from classroom to classroom, accompanied by an bemused teacher.

Chavasse spoke Irish with such a strange accident few of us understood him. But he remains in the psyche of people of my generation because of his ancient Celtic dress and saffron kilt. No one wore a kilt in those days so we always had a giggle at the man in a ‘skirt’.

He was a character at a time when there were many ‘characters’ around the town. But most of the ‘characters’ were, to use an insensititive phrase, ‘not the full shilling’. They were mostly poor people, living in poor circumstances.

But Chavasse was the exact opposite. One of his ancestors came from the south-east of France in the 17th century, to Burford in England. Claude claimed that one of his family fought with James I in Ireland. He was a fourth cousin of the Godfrey Noel Chavasse who won two Iron Crosses fighting for Germany in World War 1...

Oifigeach Gaeilge Cheatharlach

The development of the Irish language in Carlow took a positive step forward with the recent appointment of the county's first ever Oifigeach Gaeilge.

Following two months of intensive recruitment, the dream position has been filled by Carlow native, Emma Whitmore.

A past pupil of Gaelscoil Cheatharlach and Gaelcholáiste Cheatharlach, Emma studied in Dublin City University where she graduated with an honours degree in Communications in 2003.

”This is a major boost for Carlow and for Glór Cheatharlach," said Bríde de Róiste when introducing Ms Whitmore to the public on Thursday last...

The Tuarascáil Bhliantúil Annual Report 2007, launched on 8 April, has revealed the Health Service Executive, as a result of an investigation, apologised for providing public health dental services in English only for a Gaeltacht school, in breach of an agreed statutory obligation.

A parent of a child attending a national school in the Gaeltacht complained to the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs at the end of April 2007 that a Health Service Executive dentist working in the school on 24 April dealt with her child through English.

Juĝisto per Irlandalingvo?

…de la Irish Independent:

An effort by the Irish language ombudsman to establish if a district judge could speak fluent Irish was blocked by the Government.

An Coimisineir Teanga, Sean O Cuirreain, launched the investigation after a district judge was appointed to a Gaeltacht area of Donegal.

The 1924 Courts of Justice Act states that a judge allocated to a district where the Irish language is in general use must have enough of a grasp of the language so that an interpreter is not required.

Mr O Cuirreain, who yesterday published his fourth annual report since being appointed the Irish Language Commissioner, said he received a complaint by Conradh na Gaeilge following the appointment of the district judge in Donegal...

Njanĝa kaj Gaelaj Lingvoj

...de la Nyasa Times:

The statement "No to Chichewa in the North" by some overzealous northerners as reported in the media is quite unfortunate, though I wondered what prompted them to make such an unfortunate statement…

…Looking at the interpretation or misinterpretation of our constitution in recent times it will not be surprising one day to see somebody say, "The constitution says that Chichewa is the national language of Malawi and therefore the other languages are illegal."

For the time being we can not do away with English which is our official language, by the way, is English incorporated in our constitution as Malawi’s official language?

To speak ones mother’s tongue is not necessarily being tribalistic especially when speaking to somebody who understands that language, sometimes diversity must be appreciated. In fact there is revival for the study of Gaelic languages in Britain….

Irlandalingva Kurso en Butte

...de la Montana Gaela Societo:

The weekend gives those with no experience in Irish a base for learning, as well as fluent speakers the opportunity to improve their skills.
Language classes are specially designed depending on the language level of each student.

The student is grouped according to their ability and matched with an instructor that best fits their level.

There are generally three to four skill levels depending upon the number of attendees, and we take great care to place each participant in the proper level.

The schedule consists of intensive morning and afternoon tutorials with attention directed toward spoken Irish.

The goal is to foster conversational ability and fluency.

Of course, not all is work as social activities such as dance, music, and singing fill in between language sessions, giving one ample opportunity to use your new skills!

…de la Evening Times:

Moves have been made for Paisley to host the Royal National Mod.

Renfrewshire Council officials want to stage the annual celebration of Gaelic language, arts and culture, which features music, dance, drama, and literary competitions and attracts entrants from Australia, America and Canada.

There are around 60,000 Gaelic speakers in Scotland and the event would generate up to £1million for the local economy.

This year's Mod will be held over nine days in Falkirk in October, with Oban and Caithness due to host in 2009 and 2010.

Officials from Renfrewshire Council have held talks with Mod organiser An Comunn Gaidhealach in an attempt to promote the area...
