Caithness councillors insisted yesterday they would continue to fight for devolved power on the issue of adding Gaelic to signs across the county following another lengthy and passionate debate on the issue.

They were defeated in two separate votes at the council’s Inverness headquarters yesterday after arguing that the council-wide policy was “undemocratic” and would “force Gaelic down people’s throats”.
Most far north councillors maintain it is not a native language in the county and that there has been insufficient public consultation on a policy which will feature in the council’s own Gaelic Plan...
