Moves have been made for Paisley to host the Royal National Mod.

Renfrewshire Council officials want to stage the annual celebration of Gaelic language, arts and culture, which features music, dance, drama, and literary competitions and attracts entrants from Australia, America and Canada.

There are around 60,000 Gaelic speakers in Scotland and the event would generate up to £1million for the local economy.

This year's Mod will be held over nine days in Falkirk in October, with Oban and Caithness due to host in 2009 and 2010.

Officials from Renfrewshire Council have held talks with Mod organiser An Comunn Gaidhealach in an attempt to promote the area...
