Figures issued by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs show that in 2007 25,184 people attended Irish language courses funded under Scéim na bhFoghlaimeoirí Gaeilge (The Irish Language Learners’ Scheme), mainly in the Gaeltacht in 2007.
While a very small number of these students stayed in special hostels, the vast majority of them stayed in over 600 local houses. This continued high level of interest in attending courses in the Gaeltacht shows that there is still a huge interest in the language and that young people are drawn to the Gaeltacht every year by the friendly atmosphere and by the possibility of learning Irish outside of normal school classes, in places where Irish is spoken as an everyday language.
